Countdown 8/18/13

83 days remain...

I'm still in Portland so here's another for the Pilots. Check out sophomore edition Ryan Nicholas score a then career high 19 points. If the Pilots make a jump this season from their position at or near the bottom of the conference, he's going to be a big reason why, if not the main reason.

I'm currently in Portland so today's countdown features the Pilots. This workout looks really fun.

Summer League 2013 Final Statistics

Part two of the 2013 NBA Summer League wrapped up in Las Vegas tonight with the Golden State Warriors winning the offseason league's inaugural championship game. In Summer League games the West Coast Conference was represented by eleven former players. Ten played in Las Vegas and one, Kelly Olynyk, played in the smaller Orlando Summer League.

The 13th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Kelly Olynyk, had the best showing of not just the WCC products but of possibly every player at this year's Summer League. Elias Harris, Brandon Davies and Matthew Dellavedova also played well enough for a shot at a spot on a roster in the NBA in their first year out of college. Robert Sacre, who was taken by the Lakers with the last pick of the 2012 draft, performed well his second Summer League. Last week the Lakers signed Sacre to a guaranteed, multi-year contract.

A number of other former WCC players took part in the Summer League. The following is a list, sorted by school, of all WCC players to log minutes in this year's NBA Summer League. Click on the player's statistics for a larger view.

WCC Representation in Las Vegas' Summer League

Starting today, and continuing through the 22nd, Las Vegas will be a basketball oasis in the otherwise barren offseason landscape. UNLV's COX Pavilion and Thomas & Mack Center are set to play host to the NBA's second summer league of the year. The smaller of the two, in Orlando, wraps up today. Las Vegas' version features the 20 NBA teams that did not play in Orlando plus one team that did, the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat, and a select group of players from the NBA D-League known as the NBA D-League Select team.

Once again, many former WCC student-athletes have been invited to play for teams in Las Vegas. This year six of the WCC's ten schools are represented by 11 players. Click "read more" to see a full list of the former WCC student-athletes playing for NBA teams in the 2013 Summer League.

Offseason Personnel Movement Around the WCC

The landscape of college basketball is ever-changing. Some of that change, conference realignment or selfish reasons for transferring, can be negative. Some though, like natural roster turnover due to graduation, is a necessary part of the college game. Regardless of whether the change is good or bad, we have to deal with it. Unfortunately, that can be really difficult. How are you supposed to keep track of players when so many are graduating, transferring in/out, coming off redshirts/redshirting or arriving for their first year at college?

Well, this is how. I've amassed all the information on the personnel movement happening at WCC basketball programs this offseason. It's all here, listed school-by-school. Take a look at who won't be back on your least favorite team next season (because you should already know who won't be back on your favorite team). You'll also find all the new recruits, the players who will be returning from a redshirt season or two year mission, the transfers, the dismissals as well as any coaching/staff changes. Plus, there are some charts to help you understand just how much each team is losing in terms of production.

Players listed under the "going" section are shown with the year they were listed as during the 2012-'13 season. Players listed under the "coming" section are shown with the year they will be for the 2013-'14 season.

Senior Series: Derrick Rodgers

Derrick Rodgers was the only senior on the Pilots this past season. Unlike any of the other seniors being profiled in this series, he did not play for the Pilots for his whole career. The 6'1'', 210lbs guard from Rancho Cucamonga, CA spent a year at nearby Citrus College before moving into Division I.

Rodgers was a point guard while at Citrus College. As a Pilot he would play at both guard spots. This past season, on top of being the only senior, he was forced into another leadership role (point guard) when David Carr suffered a torn ACL on January 5th. His leadership earned him the honor of being voted, by his teammates, a team captain.

Looking Ahead After LMU/Portland

In case you missed it, read this.

So, now that we know Loyola Marymount will advance out of the WCC Tournament Opening Round Game by virtue of a 65-54 victory over Portland, what's next? Well, let's start with the Lions because their future is decidedly clearer than the Pilots'.

The Lions will play a second round game against #5 San Francisco on Thursday at 6:00 PM. That game will be their second game in as many days. These game-a-day stretches are rough on any team. From what I saw tonight in the Opening Round Game the Lions are in for at the very least the level of rough that any team would face in their situation. On top of the quick turnaround the Lions have to deal with the fact that their star point guard, the NCAA's 14th leading scorer Anthony Ireland, was attacked all night by the Pilots' defense. For a while in the second half it seemed that every time Ireland attempted to penetrate the defense he ended up laying on his stomach in the paint. He's a tough player, no doubt about it, but all that running into people and falling to the floor won't help his game.

For the Pilots the future is as clear as the Portland sky.

The WCC's March Madness is Orderly

Click image for full size view.
This morning only three seeds were set in stone. Since then the tournament has come into form, and the BYU at LMU game isn't even over yet! At this point, 11:50 PM Central Standard Time, the five and six seeds are not official. San Francisco and San Diego have the same conference record, necessitating a tie-breaker. The tie-breaker in this case is the teams' RPI rating. The RPI used in the tie-breaker will be taken Sunday morning. There's no way for San Diego to pass San Francisco in the RPI between now and then though, so it's the Dons that will come up with the five seed.

Game Day Info 2/2

It's the last day of the regular season so the bracket for the WCC Tournament has to be determined today. Still up for grabs are seeds three through eight. Here are the possible seedings.
1: Gonzaga. Bye to the semifinals.
2: Saint Mary's. Bye to the semifinals.
3: BYU if Santa Clara loses at Saint Mary's. Santa Clara if the Broncos win at Saint Mary's and BYU loses at LMU. Bye to the quarterfinals.
4: Santa Clara if the Broncos lose at Saint Mary's. BYU if the Cougars lose at LMU and Santa Clara wins at Saint Mary's. Bye to the quarterfinals.
5: San Francisco if San Diego loses to Pepperdine. San Diego if the Toreros beat Pepperdine and have a better RPI than San Francisco on Sunday morning (very unlikely, San Diego is 29 spots behind San Francisco at the time of this post).
6: San Diego if the Toreros lose to Pepperdine. San Francisco if San Diego beats Pepperdine and has a better RPI than the Dons on Sunday morning.
7: Pepperdine if the Waves win at San Diego. Portland if the Pilots win at Gonzaga and Pepperdine loses at San Diego.
8: Portland if the Pilots lose at Gonzaga. Pepperdine if the Waves lose at San Diego and Portland wins at Gonzaga.
9: Loyola Marymount.

WCC Saturday 2/16

Today in brief:

Gonzaga looks to remain unbeaten in WCC play, remain on track for a two seed in the NCAA tournament and pick up their 25th win of the season (sixth straight year with 25+ wins if they win tonight). The Zags have lost three straight at San Francisco and no player on their roster has won a game there.

Saint Mary's will be looking to rebound after getting crushed (relative to how they play the Zags) by Gonzaga on Thursday. A trip to the worst team in the WCC should make that easy.

BYU hosts a Portland team that should have no chance against what should be an angry Cougars squad. BYU is on a two game skid that includes a rare home loss to a (even rarer) sub .500 San Francisco team.

Santa Clara will be looking to put some distance between themselves and San Diego in the standings. Raymond Cowels III is seven points away from becoming the Broncos' fourth active player to amass at least 1,000 points, he averages 10 points per game.

WCC Saturday 2/2

WCC Game of the Week
2:30 PM PST
San Francisco Dons at Pepperdine Waves
Firestone Fieldhouse, Malibu, California.
San Francisco is 9-13 on the season, 2-7 in WCC play and is currently on a two game losing streak.
Pepperdine is 10-11 on the season, 2-6 in WCC play and currently on a two game losing streak.
TV: Time Warner Cable SportsNet, Comcast SportsNet. Delayed until 9:00 PM PST on ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain and Northwest.
Radio: 95.7 FM in the Bay Area

Pepperdine and San Francisco are coming off of close defeats at the hands of BYU and Saint Mary's respectively. Both teams played very well in those games and managed to, especially Pepperdine, put a major scare in their much more powerful foe.

In this game the chance for a major upset is gone but not the opportunity to play very well. San Francisco has the highest three point percentage of any WCC team. Not only can they score from deep but they like doing so. San Francisco is second in the WCC, by a slight margin to Santa Clara, in percentage of total points coming from long range. 33.78% of the Dons' points come from deep. That long range savvy will come in handy against a Waves team that likes to run a slow and methodical offense.

Pepperdine has the least possessions per forty minutes of any WCC team with 64.4. Against a Dons team that struggles mightily to defend, their slow pace and reliance on the two point shot should normally allow them to control the game and grind out a win. However, as I said earlier, the Dons can light it up from deep. If the Dons get going from downtown they will be able to burst past Pepperdine's slow,  two by two buildup of points.

Hey, there are two great guards playing in this game. It's a WCC game after all. Cody Doolin and Lorne Jackson are the experienced core of their young teams, and they're really good at basketball.

Game Day Info 1/31

It's the last day of January, can you believe it? Just one month sits between our present selves and our March madness selves.

7:00 PM PST
Brigham Young Cougars at Pepperdine Waves
Firestone Fieldhouse, Malibu, California.
BYU is 16-6 on the season, 6-2 in WCC play and currently on a one game winning streak.
Pepperdine is 10-10 on the season, 2-5 in WCC play and currently on a one game losing streak.
TV: Time Warner Cable SportsNet and ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain and Northwest.
Radio: KSL 1160 AM & 102.7 FM along the Wasatch Front.
Satellite Radio: BYU Radio Sirius XM 143

Portland Pilots at Santa Clara Broncos
Leavey Center, Santa Clara, California.
Portland is 8-14 on the season, 1-6 in WCC play and on a four game losing streak.
Santa Clara is 16-6 on the season, 4-3 in WCC play and on a four game winning streak.
TV: Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and Northwest.
Radio: KPDQ 800 AM in Portland, KDOW 1220 AM in the Bay Area.
Online: Live audio from KDOW and KPDQ.

Two games at once, which do you choose? Each game features a team that is in contention for the WCC title and one that is far from contention. Each features a team that needs to do nothing but keep winning for the rest of the season and a team that wants to win a few more times this season. Each features a team that is exceptional on offense and a team that isn't.

To that last point, the Portland at Santa Clara game features a team that is exceptional on offense and a team that is horrible on offense. The BYU at Pepperdine game features on team that is exceptional on offense and one that is okay on the offensive end. So, if you want to see a game with more scoring from both sides, that's the one to watch. If you want to see a potential blow out, it's Portland at Santa Clara.

Tune into either game, or both, and you'll be watching a team with very legitimate hopes of making the NCAA Tournament. That's what makes this hard choice easier to make.

8:00 PM PST
#7 Gonzaga Bulldogs at Loyola Marymount Lions
Gersten Pavilion, Los Angeles, California.
Gonzaga is 19-2 on the season, 6-0 in WCC play and currently on a two game winning streak.
Loyola Marymount is 8-11 on the season, 1-6 in WCC play and currently on a four game losing streak.
TV: ESPN2
Radio: KGA 1510 AM in the Inland Northwest, KXLU 88.9 FM in Los Angeles.
Online: Live video from ESPN3, live audio from KGA and KXLU.

Here is another match up like the two that precede it. One team that is very good at offense and one that is not. Gonzaga is second in the nation in field goal percentage at 51.1%, Creighton leads at 52.1%. Loyola Marymount is pretty bad at defense on top of struggling on offense. The Lions rank 217th in the nation in opponent field goal percentage and 7th in the WCC. It's possible that the Zags jump into first in the nation in field goal percentage after tonight.

As is almost always the case when a WCC team plays a WCC team we will have two great floor generals go at it in this one. Anthony Ireland is one of my favorite players to watch. He's 5'10'' but pulls down 5.2 rebounds per game, good for 13th in the WCC. At 19.6 points per game he ranks 18th in the nation and second in the conference. It will be interesting to see if he can keep that pace with Gary Bell Jr. guarding him. The WCC's leading scorer, Tyler Haws of BYU, wasn't able to score from the field with that match up last week.
