Could Anthony Ireland be this year's WCC Player of the Year?

Ireland averaged 20.2 points per game last season, making him the Lions' leading scorer and the WCC's second leading scorer. Only 13 players in the nation averaged more points per game than Ireland. Of those 13, only two (Tyler Haws and Doug McDermott) played more games than Ireland.

He could be this year's player of the year, that's for sure. What about becoming LMU's all-time leading scorer? Keep reading to see what it would take to pull that off.

If you're not trying to watch college football, why don't you watch this college basketball game from the 2003 NCAA Tournament? This is one of my all-time favorite games and without a doubt my favorite game that features a WCC team on the losing end.

Ronny Turiaf was the most popular man in Spokane while he was at Gonzaga, could well have been king. Here's a video promoting heart health awareness, which is a big issue in basketball. I have a ton of respect for the LA Lakers for the way they handled Ronny's heart issue.

Not sure what it is about the Lakers, but they love themselves some Zags.

His personality isn't as big and gregarious, but Brad Waldow could be this year's Omar Samhan. The Gaels need him to be if they don't want to fall from the top two in the league.

The WCC Gets a New Digital Network

Earlier today the West Coast Conference, as well as all ten of the member institutions, their teams, journalists and other people around the twittersphere helped introduce TheW.tv.

This is the new and improved version of last year's WCC Digital Network "powered by Campus Insiders". TheW.tv is still a part of Campus Insiders, but now the WCC has its own stand alone website.

During basketball season, TheW.tv will be the exclusive home of at least 20 WCC contests. On top of those games, at least 40 games from regional TV networks, like Time Warner Cable SportsNet, will be carried online by TheW.tv. This is great news. Last season, while I lived in Chicago, I managed to watch all but one conference game. However, some games I had to watch on a stream from a less than reputable (and probably not exactly legal) website. Those games were more often than not games carried on ROOT Sports or TWCSN, which do not broadcast in Chicago. This season, based on their slogan of, "All the action. Anytime. Anywhere." I won't have to settle for low quality video streams from hard to find websites.

The WCC is now home to one of the most state-of-the-art internet presences in college athletics. How cool is that? Read the official press release here.

WCC and ESPN Announce Television Schedule

Earlier today the West Coast Conference and ESPN released their television schedule for the upcoming season. This is the official release though it may not yet be complete as additional non-conference road games can be picked up by the ESPN family of networks. We will find out about those games "at a later date" (appropriate considering how long it has taken for schedules to be released this year).

Here are a few observations on this schedule.

Earlier today BYU coach Dave Rose underwent surgery after "cancerous spots" were discovered during a routine screening, per reports from KSL's Greg Wrubell. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009. According to Rose's surgeon, "the surgery went well. I expect him to make a full recovery."

Let's hope he's right. I'll be keeping Coach Rose in my thoughts and wishing him well.

Here's a segment, aired before BYU played Florida State last season, on Coach Rose's battle with pancreatic cancer.

Countdown 9/2/13

Yesterday I took a look at some rebounding numbers from five of the WCC teams, one of which was BYU. The Cougars are losing their leading rebounder from last season, Brandon Davies, but Nate Austin should be right there to step up. Dave Rose started Austin only seven times last season. However, he showed faith in Austin by starting him for the final five games of the year.

Last season Davies registered 123 more rebounds than Austin but their respective rebound rates were less than one point apart.

Countdown 9/1/13

 69 days remain...

Today we'll get into some rebounding numbers for the first five teams, alphabetically, in the WCC.

BYU: Last season the Cougars were 1st in the WCC with 35.5 RPG but were just 3rd in rebound rate, due in part to their fast pace (72.5 possessions/40 minutes, 1st WCC). The Cougars are losing the players responsible for 52.04% of last season's rebounds.
